The word woke has become so politically charged that many people stop listening the moment they hear it. But what if we stripped away the rhetoric and asked a simpler question?What does it really mean to be awake?This week, Christy and I explored the idea that being “awake” isn’t about perfection or political identity. It’s about being willing to see reality as it is, to listen to other people’s stories with humility, and to remain open to learning—even when that means admitting we’ve been wrong.We talked about why empathy requires vulnerability, why curiosity is one of our greatest strengths, and how genuine listening can become an act of love. We shared personal stories of mistakes we’ve made, the growth that followed, and why facing difficult truths ultimately creates more freedom than pretending problems don’t exist.But awareness is only the beginning.Being awake means allowing what we learn to shape how we speak, how we vote, how we treat other people, and what we’re willing to stand up for. Every act of compassion, every honest conversation, every moment we choose courage over avoidance becomes part of building the kind of country—and the kind of world—we want to live in.Being awake isn’t simply seeing what’s broken. It’s waking up each day believing our actions still matter—that we can grow, help others grow, and participate in creating something better than what exists today.
