from The Weather Man Podcast, I talk about weather! · host Steve Pellettiere
Locally heavy rains and strong winds are expected for portions of thenorthern Mid-Atlantic and southern New England through tonightHeavy wet snow and strong winds are expected across portions of thenorthern Appalachians tonight through Sunday followed by lake-effect snowsacross the lower Great Lakes into Monday morning.Unsettled weather is expected across the Pacific Northwest and into thenorthern Rockies as multiple rounds of lower-elevation rain and higherelevation snow arrives.Multiple consolidating areas of low pressure along with the arrival of acouple of cold fronts along the Eastern Seaboard will yield areas of heavyprecipitation overnight, and particularly from parts of the northernMid-Atlantic and into the Northeast. This will include locally heavy rainfor portions of eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey up across southeastNew York and into southern New England. As a consolidated area ofdeepening low pressure approaches and crosses through southern and easternNew England, locally strong winds, especially for New England can beexpected as well.Sufficient cold air is expected to filter south into the northernAppalachians to allow for the rain overspreading areas of northern NewYork and northern New England to change over to snow later tonight intoSunday, and as much as 6 to 12 inches of heavy wet snow can be expectedalong with strong gusty winds as low pressure lifts northeast across theregion. Locally heavier snowfall totals can be expected over the higherpeaks of especially Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. On the back side ofthe departing area of low pressure, colder air will be surging southeastacross the Great Lakes and into much of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, and this will gradually favor areas of heavy lake-enhanced snow showersand squalls. Portions of the lower Great Lakes and even the centralAppalachians are expected to see locally over 6 inches of snow from thelake effect potential.Elsewhere, unsettled weather will impact the Pacific Northwest and thenorthern Rockies as multiple fronts and surges of Pacific moisture arriveacross the terrain going into early next week. Moderate to locally heavyrain is expected for the coastal ranges with heavy snow over the higherelevations of the Cascades, northern Sierra Nevada, and the Sawtooth andBitterroot range of the northern Rockies. The heaviest snows should beover the Washington Cascades going through Monday where 1 to 2 feet of newsnow can be expected.Temperatures will generally be cooler than normal across the Mid-Atlanticand Northeast for the end of the weekend and early next week, but will bemuch warmer than normal across much of the central and northern U.S.otherwise. Near normal temperatures are expected over much of the West.
