Iowa Weather 3/7 Morning - Sunshine Shock & Freeze Tonic

from The Iowa Weather Podcast

Good morning. Iowa. I'm Aaron Jolly. You woke up to a damp, gray world this morning. That rain overnight left everything slick, but here’s the good news: the sun is fighting to break through. Let's take a trip statewide. Out west, you're winning the temperature lottery today. Council Bluffs and Sioux City hit **51 degrees** — a solid 26 degrees warmer than normal. But hold onto your hat. Winds are breezy at **10 to 15 miles an hour**, gusting to **25**. Tonight, you dip to **34 degrees**, but don't get used to it. Temps actually *rise* overnight into the upper 30s. By tomorrow? **70 degrees.** Summer preview, anyone? Des Moines, you’re stuck in the middle today. Highs top out at **50 degrees**, but here’s the catch: temperatures *fall* through the afternoon. Northwest winds at **9 to 15 miles an hour** make it feel chillier. Tonight, we clear out to **38 degrees**, but like the west, you warm up overnight to **49 degrees** by sunrise. Sunday is your payoff: **66 degrees and sunny.** It’s going to be gorgeous. Over in the east. Cedar Rapids and Dubuque are dealing with the coolest air. Highs struggle to **46 degrees**. With northwest winds howling at **15 to 20 miles an hour**, gusting to **30**, it feels downright raw. The Quad Cities might see a sprinkle through **9 A.M.**, but you stay dry after that. You drop to **34 degrees** tonight, then climb back into the upper 30s. Sunday brings a dramatic turnaround: **mid-60s** and full sunshine. Almost like someone flipped a switch. Here's your heads-up for the week ahead. Sunday is the star of the show — statewide **60s and 70s** with full sunshine. Records could fall. Monday stays warm in the **70s**, but a cold front sweeps in Tuesday with showers and thunderstorms. Some storms could pack a punch. Wednesday cools us back to the **40s and 50s**. And up north, that rain might even mix with snow. We rebound slightly Thursday and Friday, but clouds linger. Watch for black ice on bridges this morning. If you're driving a high-profile vehicle, keep a firm grip on that wheel. See you tomorrow. See you this afternoon.
