Iran Warns of Escalation After Tanker Strikes | Calgary News

Iran’s top negotiator warns U.S. attacks will trigger a far more brutal response, as tensions escalate after Iran struck American warships and the U.S. retaliated by hitting three Iranian oil tankers — part of a network funding Iran’s military. With the Strait of Hormuz still under Iranian control and sanctions biting hard, Tehran’s parliament speaker declares the era of restrained retaliation is over. Crews abandoned ships amid the chaos, while both sides blame each other for targeting vessels — the U.S. claims it disabled tankers to punish Iran’s proxies, Iran says it also targeted American ships and warned others away. The U.S. commander vows a 3-for-2 strike ratio: for every two Iranian ships hit, they’ll take out three of theirs. Despite administration efforts to downplay the conflict, Iran’s security chief threatens a devastating new strategy, and U.S. officials insist talks won’t resume until Iran halts attacks on commercial shipping — putting the world’s lifeline through the Strait in peril.
