First let's look at the two options, in-person and online coaching. Let’s start with in-person training. When you first get started you will probably be working for someone else. There are pros and cons to working in a commercial gym. The pros of working at a big commercial box gym are you get a steady income (which isn’t necessarily a good thing, we will talk about that more later) and almost anyone can get a job there with the right certifications. You get paid hourly at the commercial gyms with a commission of each package sold. But this type of job won’t really be your bread and butter. Another pro is you will have a steady client roster since these commercial gyms also have their own dedicated sales teams most of the time. The final pro is you will get a bunch of in person experience to where if you’d like to open up your own gym or eventually move to renting out a studio space and selling your own packages the commercial gym could be a very nice stepping stone to that. Now let us talk about the cons. The burnout is EXTREMELY high when working at these commercial gyms. The trainer’s main job is to sell packages at these gyms with a small commission from each sale. Other than that the trainers are basically paid minimum wage and need to work long hours on their feet to make a living. Thus the fast turn around of each trainer lasting only 1-2 years. Another whole avenue you can take is starting your own online business. Some Pros you have of starting your own online business is that you have an uncapped income. You don’t have a steady stream of income but you keep 100% of the packages you sell. When I started my online coaching business by the time I was twenty-three I was making ten to fifteen thousand dollars a month and was traveling the world; you just can’t do that working for someone else at a commercial gym. The next pro is you will have your dream clients. You get to decide who you get to work with, thus you can work with people you want to work with. Another great pro is you get to choose your own schedule. You don’t have to ask ANYONE for time off, you just take it off. You are also your own boss, you are now a leader, because of this you can feel a little lost. This is why I recommend you get a mentorship that way you have someone in your corner and someone to bounce ideas off of. Which one would you choose? Working at a gym for someone else living paycheck to paycheck, or starting a business and taking control of your destiny?
