Is anything too hard for the Lord?

from South Shore Community Church · host Jonathan Fleming

In Genesis 18, Abraham was sitting at the entrance of his tent when three unexpected visitors appeared near the great trees of Mamre. His response was immediate and remarkable. He ran to meet them, bowed low, and offered them the finest hospitality he could provide. His physical reaction communicated that he recognized something significant about these visitors before a single word was exchanged. The Hebrew word used for God's appearance in this passage signals a divine encounter, and Abraham's behavior reflected that recognition. When we understand who is at the door, everything about how we respond changes.Among the messages the visitors brought was a renewed promise spoken directly to Sarah for the very first time. She would have a son within the year. After decades of waiting and disappointment, Sarah laughed quietly to herself, a laugh not of joy but of weary disbelief. God's response was not punishment or withdrawal. He simply asked whether anything was too hard for Him, pointing back to a lifetime of faithfulness as evidence. In a beautiful act of redemption, the child born from that moment of doubt was named Isaac, which means laughter. What began as sarcasm became a name filled with real joy, a testament to God's grace over human weakness. The deeper invitation in this passage is one of expectancy and attentiveness. Abraham was present, alert, and ready to move when God appeared. Jeremiah 29:13 reminds us that we find God when we seek Him with our whole heart, and James 4:8 promises that drawing near to Him means He will draw near to us. God has not stopped showing up in unexpected ways. He still turns ordinary moments into divine encounters. The question worth sitting with is whether we are paying close enough attention to recognize Him when He does.
