Is Avoiding Pain Making Us Less Happy?
from The Thoughtful Therapist · host The Thoughtful Therapist
Is Avoiding Pain Making Us Less Happy? What if feeling better isn’t always the same thing as livingbetter? We spend a lot of energy trying to avoid discomfort. Wedistract ourselves, numb ourselves, stay busy, scroll, work, eat, drink, watch, escape, and sometimes those things are exactly what we need. But what happenswhen avoiding difficult emotions stops being a tool and becomes the goal?In this episode, I use the image of an emotional pendulum tothink through emotional avoidance, numbness, addiction, grief, resilience, happiness, and joy. If we constantly interrupt the swing toward sadness, disappointment, fear, or grief, do we eventually make it harder to fullyexperience excitement, love, gratitude, and wonder too? And maybe the bigger question isn’t how to become happier.Maybe it’s how to build a life that remains joyous even whensadness is present.Because most of life probably isn’t lived in our greatestmoments or our worst ones. It happens somewhere in the middle, in traffic, atdinner, at work, in conversations, in boredom, in ordinary Tuesdays. Mayberesilience isn’t about eliminating suffering at all. Maybe it changes how muchof that ordinary life suffering is allowed to take from us. Can joy and grief exist together? Does avoiding pain shrinkour emotional range? Can suffering become meaningful without pretending it wasnecessary? And is a joyous life actually something different from a happy one? That’s what I’m thinking about this week.If you have a different way of looking at it, or think I’mcompletely wrong, I’d genuinely love to hear it in the comments.More from The Thoughtful Therapist:beacons.ai/thethoughtfultherapistInstagram: @the_thoughtfultherapistYouTube: The Thoughtful TherapistBrought to you by Synergy Health Group.Chapter list00:00 Emotional Pain, Happiness & the Pendulum 03:15 Why We Avoid Difficult Emotions 05:00 Emotional Numbing and Losing Our Range 06:00 Opioids, Pain Relief & Emotional Numbness 07:00 When Discomfort Starts Feeling Intolerable 08:30 Emotional Numbness, Neutrality & Melancholy 10:15 Happiness, Meaning & Emotional Openness 12:00 When Feeling Happy Starts to Feel Unsafe 14:15 Addiction: When Pleasure Becomes Relief 16:30 Phones, Work & Everyday Emotional Avoidance 17:00 Why We Crave Drama, Chaos, & Stimulation 18:45 Healthy Coping vs. Avoiding Emotion 20:00 What Does Emotional Health Actually Look Like? 21:30 Crying, Grief & Emotional Processing 23:00 Why We Laugh While We’re Grieving 24:45 Can Suffering Become Meaningful? 27:00 Grief, Love, Vulnerability & Why Life Hurts 28:45 Stop Trying to Control the Emotional Pendulum 29:00 Why You Can’t Be Happy All the Time 30:00 A Happy Life vs. A Joyous Life 30:30 The 3% Rule: Our Best and Worst Moments 31:45 Resilience and Recovering From Hard Times 33:00 Forgiveness, Love, Sacrifice & Meaning 34:15 Why Ordinary Days Matter Most 35:00 Can Joy and Sadness Exist Together? 38:15 What Emotional Resilience Really Means 39:15 The 94% of Life We Usually Overlook 40:30 The Pendulum of Joy and Suffering
