Is God’s Authority Good for Us? | Amos 8 and the Day of the Lord

Is God’s authority something we should fear—or something we should embrace? In Amos 8, we see that God is the ultimate authority, and that the Day of the Lord is the time when His authority, judgment, blessing, and righteousness will be fully revealed.In this word from Amos 8, we consider what it means for Christians to live under the authority of a God who is not only sovereign and righteous, but also good. Human authority can sometimes be frightening when those who possess power use it for their own glory or harm others. But God’s authority is different: He loves His people and commands what is ultimately for their good.This passage also leads us into the biblical theme of the Day of the Lord. Throughout Scripture, the Day of the Lord describes God's decisive intervention in human history—a time when He comes in judgment against sin and in blessing and deliverance for His people.
