Is School Preparing Us For The Future?

Pythagoras. Calculus. Shakespeare. Chemistry. Whydo we need to study things we may never use in life? It’s a question many pupils ask. But the world they are preparing to enter is changing fast. The World Economic Forum says 39% of workers’ existing skill sets are expected to be transformed or become outdatedby 2030. Recent government-commissioned YouGov research found 73% of teachers surveyed believe the curriculum does notfocus enough on preparing young people for employment, while 66% think young people are less prepared for work than they were five years ago. And 981,000 young people aged 16-24 in the UK are currently not in education, employment or training. So how well are education and the world of work aligned? At Our Happy Place, four 16-18-year-olds from our first cohort took their questions to Rev Steve Chalke MBE, founder of Oasis. Having established a network of more than 50 primaryand secondary schools across the UK, Steve has spent decadesworking with young people and has been a vocal advocate for a major rethink of education challenging an exam-dominated system and arguing for different ways of learning, greater recognition of neurodiversity, practical skills and betterpreparation for life and work. But there’s an interesting tension: even whilearguing that the exam system needs to change, Steve and his Oasis schools still must operate within it. And the young people don’t simply agree with him. They question Steve and each other about GCSEs,exams, AI, outdated curricula, practical learning, resilience, jobs and what employers look for. Steve challenges them right back.
