"When trouble comes, where do we look for help?In Isaiah 31:1–9, Judah was tempted to trust in the military strength of Egypt rather than in the living God. Isaiah exposes the folly of this choice: the Egyptians are merely men, their horses are flesh and not spirit, but the Lord is God. The help Judah truly needed could come only from Him.And God promises to provide it. He will defend Jerusalem, deliver His people, and cause Assyria to fall by a sword “not of man.” This promise was dramatically fulfilled when the Angel of the Lord struck down the Assyrian army outside Jerusalem.This passage reminds us that our greatest problems cannot ultimately be solved by human strength. We need the power of God and the work of His Spirit.
