God wants a relationship with His people, not an association. His people back then thought if they maintained some association with God and be like the world around them at the same time they would be OK. That's like getting married and expecting your spouse to be OK with you being intimate with other people. It's like maintaining the look/form of marriage but not having your heart in it. Without your heart, it will deteriorate. The Jews tried to maintain the look/form, but their hearts were far from the Lord. They worshipped Him in vain, following the teachings of men (Isa 29:13).
