Islam is often reduced to fear-ridden cliches by western media: sensational headlines and inflammatory comments spark hostility, while the actual lives of many contemporary Muslims are ignored or misunderstood. After rejecting religious extremism as a young man, Ed Husain now defines himself as a moderate Muslim, and works advising governments and leaders on how to deal with radicalisation in their communities.
