The Arabist and Islamic scholar Angelika Neuwirth (born 1943) is one of the world's leading experts on the Koran. Her research has placed the Quranic text in the socio-historical context of late antiquity. By focussing on historical-critical Quran research, she initiated a link to Jewish historical academic traditions of Quran research in the 19th century. These were buried for decades by National Socialism and the academic traditions of the Federal Republic of Germany influenced by it.
