Islamic Architecture

In this episode, we explore Islamic architecture as a rich and diverse tradition that has developed since the seventh century across the Middle East, Europe, Africa, and Asia. Beginning with the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, we trace how Roman, Byzantine, and Sasanian influences helped shape distinctive features such as courtyards, domes, minarets, and muqarnas, often enhanced by geometric patterns, calligraphy, and arabesques. We also examine how major dynasties—including the Umayyads, Abbasids, Ottomans, and Mughals—adapted these forms to local materials, cultures, and engineering techniques, while Islamic social values influenced the planning, privacy, and structure of historic cities.
