Berko was born to Iraqi Jewish parents, speaks Arabic from them and after completing the army, served 25 years as a Lieutenant Colonel. She then got her PhD in criminology and did her doctorate thesis on Palestinian suicide bombers with an emphasis on women and children who put themselves at risk in the name of being martyrs.
