Known for his calculated and methodical approach, Keyes committed multiple murders across different states, often targeting victims at random. He buried “kill kits” (weapons, cash, and tools) in remote locations years in advance, which allowed him to carry out crimes with little immediate trace back to himself.Keyes avoided patterns that typically help investigators—he chose victims of varying ages and backgrounds, used different methods, and traveled extensively to separate his crimes geographically from his personal life. He was eventually arrested in 2012 after abducting and killing 18-year-old Samantha Koenig in Alaska.
