It Doesn't Leave People Quite Whole

It's October y'aaaall. The leaves are changing. It is getting nippy - so we decided to get the blood pumping and warm up with 'Kindred' by Octavia Butler.  This time travel adventure is no picnic, and Dana, the protagonist, is suddenly and inexplicably wrenched through time into antebellum Maryland. For any black person, a definite "WTFFFFFF" moment. Esha and Kristen discuss the themes woven beautifully in this fast-paced read that might have you yelling at the book in the same way. The sisters wonder what hard choices they could make to survive slavery and to ensure their return to their own time.  Published in June 1979, it is touted as the firt sci-fi novel written by a black woman.  Kindred explores the dynamics and dilemmas of antebellum slavery from the sensibility of a late 20th-century black woman, who is aware of its legacy in contemporary American society. **SPOILERS** @1:08-1:10 mark.
