It is "imperative" that the upcoming elections in Somalia are handled correctly
from General Podcast · host Channel Africa
It is "imperative" that the upcoming elections in Somalia are handled correctly given that the electoral process for parliament was marred by corruption and intimidation. That's the message that Michael Keating, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia and Head of the UN Assistance Mission in the country, UNSOM, delivered to the UN Security Council on Friday. The country is holding presidential elections on 8 February. Having a President viewed as "legitimate" by the Somali population and the international community will help tackle some of its most "pressing" issues such as drought, security and inter-clan conflicts. Keating sat down with Joshua Mmali ahead of his Council briefing.
