It's A Quinnderful Life: A Saga about Three Brothers and Two Rabid Fanbases (Ft. Locked On Wild)

What this episode covers

The episode brings together Zach Berman of Locked On Devils and Seth Toupal of Locked On Wild for a much-anticipated crossover, addressing the heated conversation around Quinn Hughes's ongoing contract negotiations with the Minnesota Wild. Both acknowledge the intensity of the fan discourse from both Devils and Wild fans, which has only escalated as the offseason dragged on without a resolution. They also reminisce about their personal connections to Minnesota, providing some levity amid the heavier hockey talk 00:00:54. A central focus is the reported stall in Hughes’s negotiation, with both hosts noting that speculation far outweighs confirmed facts at this point. Zach Berman points out that fans on each side seem to interpret every delay as either a clear win or loss for their team, although the reality is far more nuanced 00:04:05. Seth Tupow reminds listeners that, like past high-profile negotiations (referencing the Kirill Kaprizov situation), periods of seemingly little movement are typical and not always cause for panic. Both agree that unless there's still no agreement once training camp starts in earnest, it's too early for either fan base to overreact 00:08:48. As discussions turn to contract mechanics and league trends, the looming Cale Makar extension is highlighted as a likely benchmark for what Hughes’s next deal might look like 00:12:48. The hosts speculate on possible contract lengths and dollar amounts, with both leaning toward a lucrative but perhaps not record-breaking deal for Makar that would influence Hughes accordingly—potentially in the $18–$19 million annual range 00:15:03. They debate what happens if no extension is signed by October: Would Minnesota risk keeping Hughes as a potential rental for a playoff run, or pivot and trade him mid-season to avoid losing him for nothing? Seth argues this is a risky proposition and expects escalation only if no deal materializes by the first weeks of training camp 00:19:26. The episode closes with a look at the broader league context, including trade requests from other Team USA members like Dylan Larkin and Connor Hellebuyck, and how movement among marquee players could impact the Hughes situation 00:24:02. Both Zach Berman and Seth ultimately predict that a Hughes deal with the Wild will get done, most likely a medium-term extension once the relevant market comparables are in place, but exhaustion with the ongoing drama is apparent. The hosts urge for a resolution soon, echoing the widespread desire among fans and insiders alike simply to move on to actual hockey 00:29:00.
