It's Raining Fish and Frogs

from News For Kids · host ICRT

Woah! That rain is really heavy! Some people might even say "it's raining cats and dogs''! But that's just a funny expression. It just means heavy rain. 意思是在下傾盆大雨,並沒有真的在下動物雨。 But there actually is a very strange and rare weather event called animal rain! Yep. And it happened not long ago in the state of Texas in the USA. 美國德州最近真的發生下動物雨! On what seemed like just a normal rainy day, people suddenly noticed fish and frogs falling to the ground! How does this happen? Sometimes a swirling wind, like a tornado, happens over water. This is called a waterspout. 有時候龍捲風會在水上形成,叫做水龍捲。 Sometimes small animals like fish and frogs get pulled into the waterspout and carried away from the water. They then come back down to the ground with the rain. 魚或是青蛙這些小動物,有時候會被水龍捲捲上半空,然後隨著大雨掉回地上。 That's how it rains fish and frogs! That's so weird, right? There have even been reports of other animals coming down with rain. Birds, crabs, and even snakes and spiders! 也有人看過其他種類的動物,像是鳥、螃蟹、蛇跟蜘蛛,跟著雨從天而降。 Woaaaah! That sounds like a nightmare! And probably another reason to always bring an umbrella! ________________________________ Vocabulary 下雨時小動物隨著雨滴一起落下來,真會嚇人一跳! 1) Rain 下雨。 Are you going out? 你要出門嗎? Indeed. Tornadoes can pick up a person and throw them down. 龍捲風可以把人捲起來再扔下來。 4) Happen 發生。 What's happening? 發生了什麼事? Why are you running downstairs? 為什麼你們往樓下跑? A tornado is coming! 龍捲風要來了! This Impact Studios production is a collaboration with the Governor family, UTS Faculty of Law and Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research. The Last Outlaws teamKatherine Biber - UTS Law Professor and Chief InvestigatorAunty Loretta Parsley - Great-granddaughter of Jimmy Governor and the Governor Family Historian Leroy Parsons - Governor descendant, Narrator and Co-WriterKaitlyn Sawrey - Host, Writer and Senior ProducerFrank Lopez - Writer, Managing Next Generation Energy Systems Cambridge University Background Stakeholders working with energy systems have to make complex decisions formulated from risk-based assessments about the future. The move towards more renewables in our energy systems complicates matters even further, requiring the development of an integrated power grid and continuous and steady transformation of the UK power system. Network flows must be managed reliably under uncertain demands, uncertain supply, emerging network technologies and possible failures and, further, prices in related markets can be highly volatile. Mathematicians working with engineers and economists, can make significant contributions to address such issues, by helping to develop fit-for-purpose models for next generation energy systems. These interdisciplinary approaches are looking to address a range of associated problems, including modelling, prediction, simulation, control, market and mechanism design and optimisation.
