J H Williams III Echolands Interview

from GateCrashers · host GateCrashers

On this episode, J.H. Williams III (Sandman Overture, Promethea, Batwoman, Batman, Desolation Jones, Blondie, The Sword) returns to the show after the release of the first volume of his series Echolands from Image Comics. Our first conversation happened after Issue 1 which only gave us a brief glimpse into the world he co-created with W. Haden Blackman (Star Wars, Elektra). The team is once again joined by the legendary Dave Stewart on colors and the GOAT Todd Klein. In a bizarre future world that has forgotten its history, a reckless thief, Hope Redhood, holds the key to excavating its dark, strange past—if only she and her crew can escape a tyrannical wizard and his unstoppable daughter. But fate will send them all on a path leading to a war between worlds. Echolands is a landscape format, mythic-fiction epic where anything is possible—a fast-paced genre mashup adventure that combines everything from horror movie vampires to classic mobsters and cyborg elves, to Roman demigods and retro rocket ships. It's full of things you know spun in an entirely new way. With this interview Dan and J.H. were able to really dive deeper into the world and its inspirations. The discussed quotes as a form of inspiration to them as creators. Williams got a bit in depth on each of the different parts of the world of Echolands including Horror Hill which Dan was eager to learn much more about. Dan talks about their discussion of Cor in the first episode and why the character is important for him and others. Both of their minds spent some time in the gutters... no not those gutters weirdos... the gutters of the page itself to discuss how it can effect the art and story on page physically. They also once again talk about music and specifically Lizzo. Echolands Vol 1 is out now wherever comics are sold in a hardcover format. This is the series you want to read physically to truly absorb all of the feeling of holding the abnormal formatting. Read our review here!
