Most arguments about Israel begin in 1948. Jewish identity is also historical, national, cultural, and civilizational — a form of peoplehood that long predates the modern State of Israel.That distinction matters because many contemporary arguments about Zionism depend on stripping Jewish history of its chronology.The conversation explores why Zionism emerged in nineteenth-century Europe despite Jewish emancipation, including the impact of the Russian pogroms, the Dreyfus Affair, political antisemitism, and the failure of modern liberalism to eliminate older forms of tribal hatred.Stone also explains how October 7 changed his understanding of Jewish identity and sharpened his interest in the first principles behind Zionism.A major focus of the episode is Ze’ev Jabotinsky and his famous 1923 essay, The Iron Wall.Rather than presenting Jabotinsky as a simple advocate of force, Stone argues that the Iron Wall begins with political realism: Arab opposition to Zionism was rooted in genuine national identity and could not simply be purchased away through economic development or goodwill.
