Étant jeune, Georgia O’Keeffe était particulièrement fascinée par l'arisème petit-prêcheur (jack-in-the-pulpit en anglais). En 1930, elle compose une série de six toiles représentant cette plante à fleurs courante en Amérique du Nord près du lac George à New-York. Jack-in-the-Pulpit n° IV montre un gros plan du spadice, tel une langue, sur le fond violet foncé de l'intérieur caverneux de la spathe. Un feuillage vert et la suggestion d'un ciel couvert encadrent la fleur dans les coins gauche et droit du haut de la peinture.
