若いころ武蔵鐙（ムサシアブミ）に魅了されていたオキーフは、1930年ニューヨークのレイク・ジョージで、この北アメリカによくみられる花を題材にした、6つの作品からなるシリーズを制作しました。武蔵鐙、No. 4では、濃い紫の仏炎苞（ぶつえんほう）のくぼみのなかに、舌のような形をした肉穂花序（にくすいかじょ）が拡大されて描かれています。緑の葉と曇り空のような背景は、上部の左右の隅に抑えられています。
