JACOB'S STONE AT BETHEL
from Biblical Archaeology on SermonAudio Hosted by Pastor Darrell Bailey
JACOB'S STONE AT BETHEL. [When an Ordinary Stone Became a Memorial] Genesis 28:10–22 KJV What happens when an ordinary stone becomes a memorial of an extraordinary encounter with God?In this powerful lesson, we follow Jacob as he flees from home, faces an uncertain future, and spends a lonely night in the wilderness. With nothing but a stone for his pillow, Jacob discovers that God is present even in life's darkest and loneliest places.Through Jacob's dream of a ladder reaching toward heaven, God's covenant promises, and the stone Jacob erected at Bethel, we discover the importance of remembering God's faithfulness. We also examine the ancient standing stones known as masseboth, including those discovered at Gezer, and learn to distinguish biblical certainty from archaeological evidence and speculation. Most importantly, we discover how Jacob's ladder points beyond the stone to Jesus Christ, the only way to the Father.Every Christian ought to have some Bethels—spiritual landmarks where we remember God's presence, answered prayers, and unfailing faithfulness. But our faith must never rest in a place, a monument, or a memory. It must rest in Jesus Christ alone! REMEMBER YOUR BETHEL—BUT BUILD YOUR LIFE ON JESUS CHRIST! "Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not." — Genesis 28:16 KJV The stone remembered the encounter. The ladder pointed toward heaven. But only the Savior can bring us to God!
