‘Where’s your keys, where’s your phone, where’s your knife ?’ Children navigating their community in fear … carrying weapons… Are we an aspirational city in Birmingham for our children, what opportunities are there, is there a way out to give hope ? This is not a race thing and it can happen to anyone. However, the media would have you believe this is a black issue and it’s related to gangs and drugs. So what can we do? We can not arrest our way out of this … we need a whole system at every systems level… awareness raising, support for parents and carers, early intervention at the right time, opportunities for children, learning through bleed kit training. This epidemic is not easy to treat … there are deep-rooted issues that we are not addressing and we are only putting sticky plasters on open wounds!
