He probably loves preseason football. Jake Bobo is with us, and I will fully admit to you I cannot stand preseason football. Talk to me about that. I'd imagine you are not in the minority on that one.
I can't say I hate it. Of course. I don't play games at count. Obviously it's not a lot of people.
I'm not satisfied yet. 100%. These are interesting competitions. My take is this.
First of all, this is way before your time. When I was a kid, like a kid, a kid, like two or three, they played six preseason games. Then they played four preseason games. Now they play three preseason games.
Pretty soon they'll play none preseason games if not maybe one preseason game. You get the sense that most veterans would rather have it that way if you're going to go out there and bust your ass and risk getting hurt. Let's make this thing count. Yes.
Yes. I think that would be yes. Most vets would say that's the case. Most non-vets.
I would say thoroughly enjoy preseason games. When you were a rookie person. Right. Yeah.
If not for those three preseason games, we might not be having this kind of game. That's actually a great question. What do you think you're doing? If the NFL did not have preseason games.
What's Jake Bobo? Obviously you've been a stud for these guys. Your fan favorite everybody loves you. Including Kevin Harlan by the way.
But if you're not doing this, what are you doing? I'm sitting behind a desk somewhere driving myself nuts. You're going challenge? I mean I was an econ guy.
Okay. Now I was an econ guy. Gotcha. Thanks to COVID honestly.
But yeah man no telling might be might do some sales. Yeah. Maybe do this for a living. Maybe it doesn't take much.
It's really easy. Oh come on. I'm not going to do that. Jake I've heard about over these last few weeks of training camp is the battle at number three wide receiver.
Get MBS, you got Tory Horner, rookie. You're obviously in that competition. Take us inside the walls of that battle right now. But you know obviously we know cups in here.
You know J.S. sends in here. What's that battle like on that depth chart right now? Well I mean I mean I also think guys there's a battle for receiver three.
There's a battle for receiver four. There's a battle for receiver five. If there's a receiver six there's a battle for that one. But that's the great part about our receiver room right now.
We have some studs in there. From the young guys at Rooks, Rick, TB. Obviously Tory has made a name for himself these last couple days. So yeah man I mean that's a bunch of good receivers in there.
And I mean we got a couple more we see how it shakes out. The cool part about it though is everybody in that room is a good dude. Is that different by the way? No I don't know how I've gotten lucky.
Because you hear horror stories about the NFL about guys you know it's cut throughout this. But in my three years here I've gotten very very lucky to have rooms of receivers that have while there's competition no doubt guys take care of each other. And I'm not sure if that's the case in other places but I'm honestly proud to say that is definitely the case in this building. Well Jake Bobo is with us on the radio show.
You like that. I get that for you. You can make a ringtone in your phone by the way. What did you pick up from Lockett and Metcalfe that you still take with you today?
Because we talked to Jackson about that and they still talking. These guys are always talking. They're not going to guys forever once you left there the same thing. What did you pick up from those two guys?
On the field there's a laundry list. Like I could talk to you guys for 30 minutes about the stuff I want. Just give your meeting. No breaks.
Can you make that happen? Absolutely. He's got COVID he can't make it happen. I mean just you know DK learning how to be physical is a receiver, lock, diagnosis, whatever.
But the biggest thing I took from both those guys is how they took care of the young guys in the room. Which is really really cool. What do you mean by that? Like literally hand over money or something?
What's that? Give a story that stands out about DK or Lockett where they showed you how to treat people when they were here. I do. He's probably going to give me flak for sharing this.
Oh good. Dude this was my rookie. I have my girlfriend. She's in Durham, North Carolina as a volleyball coach.
She's coming out here to visit me one of these weekends in OTAs. He's down in LA. I was going to go down to LA with him. Does DK you're talking about?
This is DK. Gotcha. To work out at UCLA because we both have connections there. My girlfriend ended up coming outside and saying, the lady's in town.
I'm going to have to hang here. And so he's like, yeah dude, whatever, take care of your business business. And then I get a call from what's the nice steakhouse in Bellevue. Rooftop.
I gotcha. You talk about Daniel? No, not Daniel's. We pretty much steakhouse.
I got a send. I got a call from a send that a reservation has been made in my name for two. My car has been put down. Oh my god.
We didn't look after him on the bill. Hold on. Good for you. But now man, that just goes to show.
I had known him for maybe half a year at this point. He took care of me, Jax, all the other young guys, not only our rookie year but our second year, Locks the same way. So me now being able to kind of repay that with some of the young guys coming in. They showed me how they did it.
I mean, even though, you know, DK is in Pittsburgh, Locks in Tennessee, I kind of want to carry on that. You talk about your girlfriend. I understand that she's now your fiance. She is indeed.
So what's the story? How did you propose? So we both went to Duke. I worked out there in the off season so we were there anyway.
Took her over to the freshman campus where we first met. I know it did. And you know, popping me, blacked out. What did you say?
You got your other words? No idea. You know, I've been in some high leverage pressure situations. Facing UW in the Rosebend.
Yeah. You had to bring that up, didn't you? I underestimated that situation. Really?
You got nervous? No problem playing in front of 70,000 people, but dropping to a knee and sweating. I had to go take a shower after that. If you didn't, Durham, it was probably the only time you made it.
100% you made it. Next summer. And are we invited? Next summer.
You're on a two drink limit. That's fine. You're on my own. You think this is by the way.
I mean, you ain't having a big wedding unless you're asking the media to cover it by the way. We got to get some influencers out there who jake bobos with us on the radio show and another offensive coordinator. Three years in the NFL and three different offensive coordinators. Maybe it's you.
Maybe it's you problem. I'm sorry. Crazy. Right?
Can we pick a guy and keep him around for crying out loud? So how hard has that been? I mean, you know, there's been, I know like Josh Rosen had like nine coordinators and nine years or whatever going on. Go back to college.
How difficult was that number one to do? Another change and how different is this offense going to look on game day versus the offense we saw a year ago? A lot different. First of all, second of all, there's something about it.
It's complex, but it's easy to learn. And I don't know whether that's because, you know, it's a west coast and so we tag a lot of the stuff, you know, we're going to go, I left, ex post, seed dig, whatever. I don't know if that's some of it. I don't know if it's just some of the rules in the run game making more sense and clicking with guys brains a little better than some of the things in the past.
But I mean, it's been really fun to just kind of dive into this thing and dissect Clint's brain and what he wants to do and what some of the schemes and ideas that he has. And also, you know, you've got a, you know, damn near coordinator in Cooper Cup in our room as well. Right. So we're going to kind of pick his brain and his mind on.
Good dude. I've gotten very lucky. Yes. Massive ego.
Very hard to deal with. He said the same thing about you. But he's just that punk. Nick, he is.
Last thing for me. Vegas coming to town. Your old coach. Chip Kelly.
Yeah. Yeah. So you got you got Chip Kelly specifically on ship, you know, being under him at UCLA in 2022. Come into the NFL now after a bunch of time in college.
What do you think he does with Vegas and not only this game, but just overall his style coming to the NFL here? Well, obviously I haven't been with him in a couple of years. I would say that his being in his offense prepared me tremendously to come and be successful at this level. So he was doing a lot of stuff that we're doing now when I was in college, whether in a lot of that was in the run game and, you know, going and dig out safeties and being involved in the count of the offensive line and where they're going in their points and spots and stuff like that.
But the other thing is he's so creative. Like we had a freak and it was the worst at the time because we had a damn near new playbook every week. So we got you down coming to town. We're going to put this, this, this, this, and this in.
Okay. We got to Eugene next weekend. We're going to put this, this, this, and this in. I had me lining up in like an offset eye formation as like a full back.
I go back and check the tape from that one. Like I had a hand in the ground. I'm like, I say that to say, I mean, the guy is just a football maniac. Right.
Right. I think he's going to have a ton of success. Not only because he's a great dude. He's a great coach.
Yeah. But he's got a lot of things up for you. You know, we get along a lot better after he left. We're going to take that.
I bet. Jake, are you going to go just a quick thought on Pete Carroll. A flash of hormonal upsurgeres. I'm going to go back to town.
How do you think he'll be greeted by the guys in this locker room that played for him? Lots of hugs. Yeah. Lots of hugs.
I mean, nothing but love for Pete and what he's done, at least for me on a personal level. You know, I'm looking forward to giving him a big bear hug and I know a bunch of guys in the locker room are too. So that'll be, that'll be fun. I'm looking forward to that.
Yeah. He's going to treat this like the Super Bowl. He's already saying it. I'm going to say it.
I'm going to say it for the Raiders. Yes. For a punt rush or something. That's going on.
Let's take every down. All right, man. Listen, go get him. Hey, man.
Appreciate it. Hey, let's hear it for Jake Bobo. I know that you guys, these guys came over here. They thought it was Steve Largent, but it's actually Jake Bobo.
Yeah, exactly. I'm sorry. It's not Cooper. It's Jake Bobo.
I apologize. Good to see you man. Good luck to you this year. Hey, this is A's to Evanport and Sean Clemens.
