JAMA July 2026 Lung Transplant for Refractory Lung-Limited Stage IV Non–Small Cell Lung Cancer.
from This Week In Medicine · host A.I.O.
This study evaluates the effectiveness of lung transplantation as a potential treatment for advanced cancer patients whose disease has reached the stage of respiratory failure but remains confined to the lungs. Historically, surgeons avoided this approach due to fears of poor outcomes, but the researchers found that patients who received new lungs experienced a significantly higher survival rate at one year compared to those who only received standard medical care. Remarkably, the cancer patients who underwent the procedure showed early survival results that were comparable to non-cancer transplant recipients, suggesting that the surgery is a viable use of donor organs. While these findings demonstrate favorable early survival for carefully selected individuals, the authors emphasize that further research is necessary to understand the long-term durability and quality of life associated with this intervention.
