JAMA June 2026 Prior Traumatic Brain Injury and Alzheimer Disease Blood Biomarkers Importance

This study investigates whether a history of traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects the reliability of modern blood-based biomarkers used to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease. By examining Vietnam War veterans, researchers discovered that while these blood tests are highly precise for those without head injuries, their diagnostic accuracy drops significantly as the severity of a patient's TBI history increases. The findings suggest that physical trauma to the brain may interfere with chemical signals, potentially causing clinicians to overlook positive casesof amyloid buildup. Consequently, the authors conclude that medical professionals must exercise extreme caution when interpreting Alzheimer’s blood tests for patients who have previously suffered concussions or significant head trauma.
