His cap hit over the next few years 2020- $7,172,332 (half is his signing bonus 3.5 million)- So really 3.6 million (if traded to another team). 2021- $9,860,000. Franchise tag- $11,441,000 right now- but will be in the $14/15 million range for 2022. None of these prices are expensive- but most of it is not cheapWhat if they Sign him to an extension. Pro Builds good will (you already said to him you would talk about it). Adamssaid in instagram post “I can’t even get my first proposal that they said they would send over in January...” Locks him up long term. Con Established a precedent for exnding with more than 1 year left Arg. - you can say 5th year option/rookie deal is different than a player on a second contract who is not happy. The question- Does his play equate to this kind of value? What about a Trade- Have to determine value. Jamal Adams is elite at a position that is hard to value. Some teams might value him highly because he enables you to run nickel & dime personnel effectively. But for alot of teams that’s a 2nd rd value still- (only 1 year of really good value “cost control” & 5th year option). If I’m the Jets - I want something more right? I want a 2nd plus a good player - I, at minimum want a first round value. What if they Do nothing- Promised to talk to him in january- never sent an offer sheet. There is Ambiguity with the cap going into the future because of Covid19. While I get this- his cap hit on the new contract would most likely come in 2022, 2023. His hit in 2021 would probably be about the same as 5th year option. Risk a “Hold-in”. The new CBA has - essentially- killed the concept of the hold out by making it clear that a hold out will hurt the player’s occurring of a season under the CBA Also- now teams are not able to forgive fines for holdouts with players on second contract This might lead to a “gold-in”- something we have seen with Jalen Ramsey “Ooh my back hurts, my leg is tight”
