West Virginia's own Cpt (Ret) James L. McCormick currently from New Haven, WV (Mason County) was awarded the Silver Star, our nations third highest honor for combat gallantry. His actions in 2004 while suffering from three separate gunshots saved the lives of hundreds and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy. James is the third living West Virginian to receive the Silver Star in the current war and his honors include. Silver Star, Three Bronze Stars with "V", Three Purple Hearts, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with "V" and many others according to his official records. Army Historian Richard Killblane stated that McCormick is one of the true Heros America has, he consistently reacted to enemy fire the same way each time with exceptional courage, veracity and tenacity. Suffering multiple gun shot wounds, PTSD and a TBI McCormick retired in 2009 and since then has thrown himself into work assisting fellow veterans across the state and Nation.  James McCormick is currently a member of the West Virginia Governor’s Council, which serves to advise the Governor and Secretary of Veterans Assistance on matters concerning veterans and their families. He is the State Director for the West Virginia Veterans and Warriors to Farming and Agriculture program, a program that assists veterans in becoming involved in agriculture with a real opportunity to enter in to the field of Agriculture and Farming with access to state resources, giving the veteran the maximum opportunity to succeed.
