Barry was one of the heroic first responders to the AIDS crisis in Houston in the 1980s, volunteering for the Montrose Counseling Center, serving on the board of AIDS Foundation Houston, and organizing one of the first large-scale displays of the NAMES Project AIDS Quilt at the Jewish Community Center.
