JARAMA VALLEY- A song from the Spanish Civil War (1936-39)

“Jarama Valley” (El Valle del Jarama) is the title for a song made popular by the English-speaking volunteer soldiers in the International Brigades helping the Republic of Spain during its dramatic Civil War… during 1936-39. The music of the song was already known as a popular cowboy song under the title: “Red River Valley.” It was even recorded and performed on stage in the US (1927) by artists like Hugh Cross and Riley Pcket. However, the lyrics changed in 1937 by British poet-soldier Alex McDade, who used the existing tune with his own words… creating an energetic song… even today. For some, it is a piece of history and pride… lyrics not forgotten, while for others it is a song of foreign flavor. Emiliano Martín recites the lyrics along with the song’s music.
