Jason and the Argonauts: The Complete Quest for the Golden Fleece | Greek Mythology for Sleep

from Mythology And Folklore For Sleep · host The Sleepy Mythkeeper

A slow, quiet retelling of the voyage of the Argonauts, told from the beginning and made for falling asleep to.The whole story of the quest for the Golden Fleece, at a pace that's deliberately too slow to follow properly. That's the point. You're not meant to reach the end.It starts with a young man arriving in a city that should have been his, missing one sandal, and a king who recognised him immediately and sent him after something impossible rather than kill him outright. So a ship was built, and the crew that signed on for it was the largest gathering of heroes in any Greek story — most of them with their own legends attached, all of them squeezed onto the same deck for years. What follows is the voyage out: the islands where they were welcomed and the islands where they should have kept sailing, a crewman lost and a friend who refused to leave without him, a strait that ground ships to pieces between two moving rocks, and a long haul east to a kingdom at the end of the sea. Then the tasks that couldn't be completed, the king's daughter who decided to help him anyway, and the far messier business of getting home. It's the oldest sea story in Europe, and almost none of it ends the way you'd want it to.But the point of this recording isn't really the story. It's the hour or two spent drifting through it. The voice stays low and even the whole way through. No music, no sound effects, nothing that rises or drops or suddenly arrives. Every sentence sits at roughly the same level as the one before it, so nothing ever pulls your attention back up to the surface. That's what makes it work on the nights when your head won't switch off. It's just interesting enough to give your thoughts something to hold, and slow enough that they let go of it on their own. You don't have to follow along. You don't have to remember any of it in the morning. If you drift off before the ship has even left harbour and wake up somewhere out at the far end of the sea, you've used this exactly the way it's meant to be used. Most people don't make it past the first half hour, and the rest will still be here tomorrow night.Put it on, turn the volume down, and let it go on without you.Mythology & Folklore for Sleep — long, calm retellings of Greek myths, Norse legends, Egyptian tales, Hindu epics, Chinese classics and old folklore from around the world, made for insomnia and the hours when you can't sleep.
