KEY TAKEAWAYS In my mid- to late-40s, I took stock of where I was, I loved my corporate career, but I wanted to have more freedom, choice & flexibility in my life. Now, having a portfolio career gives me more choice around being able to travel more & ultimately, I call the shots. When scaling up, what got you to where you’re at now won’t necessarily get you where you want to get to in the next phase. Having a clear, differentiated position in the market is really important when you scaling, otherwise you’re just competing on price against your competitors. Be clear on your proposition to the customer & know where you want to take the business. There are only 24 hours in a day & you’re only one person, your success in whatever field you’re in will often be dictated by the talent around you. As you scale you may find there are certain functions that you didn’t need before that you do now, or a combined role may now be at a scale where it needs to be separated & more resources need to be brought into the business. In any business it’s great to have a mix of talent, experience, some of which is age related: the older you are the more experience you’re going to have. But, the younger generation will have fresh thoughts & more energy. Everyone contributes to a team. With Gen Z, it’s important to understand their motivations in terms of flexibility, they tend to be more values- and purpose-led & they’re choosing who they want to work with on how they align with their morals & values BEST MOMENTS ‘There’s never an easy time to scale a business, there will always be something that will challenge you, so really get clear on why you’re scaling up, start with the end in mind & work backwards.’ ‘If your systems, processes, the boring stuff is not solid you won’t be able to scale, it will fall over at some point. Map them out now & understand which areas you need to strengthen.’ ‘Don’t feel you have to scale up, it might not be right for you, you’ve got to want to do it yourself because it’s a hard thing to do. Prepare before you start on the journey of growth.’ ‘The formula for success is: belief + purpose + action = results.’ ABOUT THE GUEST Jeannette Linfoot is a distinguished corporate CEO turned entrepreneur, board advisor, mentor, & investor, renowned for her ability to guide business leaders, C-suite executives, & entrepreneurs through complex business challenges & towards scalable growth. Growth isn’t just about scaling a business. It’s about scaling yourself first. In this episode of Scouting for Growth, Sabine VanderLinden is joined by Jeannette Linfoot—former corporate CEO turned portfolio entrepreneur, board advisor, mentor, investor, and creator of the globally recognised Brave, Bold, Brilliant platform—to explore what sustainable growth really demands at different stages of leadership and life. Jeannette’s story resonates deeply with many senior leaders. In her mid-to-late 40s, after a successful corporate CEO career, she paused—not because she was failing, but because she wanted choice, freedom, and intentionality. What followed was a bold transition to a portfolio career, where she now leads multiple businesses, advises boards, mentors executives, and designs her life on her own terms. This conversation goes beyond career reinvention. It dives into the real mechanics of scaling—and why what got you here won’t get you there. Jeannette is clear: scaling without a clear, differentiated market position is a fast route to margin erosion. If you don’t know exactly who you serve, why you’re different, and where you’re going next, you end up competing on price instead of value. Growth starts with clarity, not ambition. A recurring theme is capacity. There are only 24 hours in a day—and leaders who scale successfully understand that results are dictated by the quality of the team around them. As businesses grow, roles evolve. What once worked as a combined function often needs to be separated. Systems, processes, and governance—the “boring stuff”—become non-negotiable foundations for scale. Jeannette also brings a refreshingly balanced perspective on multi-generational teams. Experience matters. So does energy and fresh thinking. Gen Z, she explains, is more purpose-led, values-driven, and selective about who they work with. Leaders who want to attract and retain top talent must understand why people choose to stay—not just how to pay them. Importantly, Jeannette challenges the assumption that everyone should scale. Growth is optional—but it must be intentional. Scaling is hard. It demands resilience, preparation, and a compelling “why.” If the desire isn’t there, forcing growth is often more damaging than staying deliberately small. Throughout the episode, Jeannette returns to a simple but powerful formula: Belief + Purpose + Action = Results Listeners will walk away with practical insights on: When scaling is right—and when it isn’t Why clarity of proposition matters more than speed How systems and processes enable (or block) growth What portfolio careers unlock for experienced leaders How to lead across generations with empathy and intent 🎧 If you’re a founder, executive, or investor questioning your next phase of growth—personally or professionally—this episode is essential listening. Because the bravest growth decisions aren’t always about getting bigger. They’re about getting clearer, bolder, and more intentional.
