Jehovah — Jehovah Nissi: The Lord Our Banner
from LifeWell Messages
Opening with a candid confession about worrying over storm damage to the building, the teaching turns to Exodus 17 and Israel's battle against the Amalekites at Rephidim. As long as Moses held the staff of God aloft Israel prevailed; when his arms fell, they lost. The decisive factor was not the soldiers' skill but Moses' posture toward God, sustained all day only because Aaron and Hur held up his hands. No one, not even Moses, achieves victory alone, and the church is called to hold its leaders' hands up through prayer, giving, and service. Moses builds an altar and names it Jehovah-Nissi , the Lord our banner. The closing principles refuse half-measures: victory comes from the Lord but does not excuse us from the battle, and God's people are to rally behind the banner of the cross rather than settle into worldly compromise.
