Jeremiah: Chapters 13-15 — August 9, 2026
from Preaching and Teaching from St. John Ev. Lutheran Church (Sherman Center), Random Lake, Wisconsin · host Rev. Christopher Gillespie
God’s word for what He made Israel to be is clinging: “as the sash clings to the waist of a man, so I have caused the whole house of Israel… to cling to Me” (13:11). The sash that stops clinging rots in a hole by the river and is good for nothing. Then watch what happens to the man who preached it. In chapter 14 the people cry that they are “called by Your name”(14:9), that their wound has no healing (14:19), that God has become a stranger. In chapter 15 Jeremiah says the same words back — “I am called by Your name” (15:16), “my wound incurable” (15:18) — and accuses God of being a dry creek bed. The prophet has become the people. And God’s answer is not an explanation but a call to the very thing he has been preaching: “If you return, then I will bring you back.”
