Jeremy At Crale; His Friends, His Ambitions And His One Great Enemy-Hugh Walpole

David Hume stands as a towering figure in the Western philosophical landscape, but it is his historical narratives that truly sustained him. His monumental work, The History of England from the Invasion of Julius Caesar to the Revolution of 1688, published between 1754 and 1764, captured the imagination of readers and established him as a household name. Hume himself noted that the financial success from the booksellers far surpassed anything previously seen in England, granting him both independence and wealth. This six-volume masterpiece continues to be published and remains a vital part of English historical literature. While often compared with Thomas Babington Macaulay, who picks up where Hume leaves off, both historians offer unique insights into Englands rich past. (Summary by Richard Carpenter)
