In 1997, at the age of 25, he had the opportunity to move to Maui, Hawaii and booked a one-way ticket to paradise. When Riggs moved to Maui he got a job in the marble and granite industry. During his time off he would explore the beaches on Maui to find new ways to ride waves. In the year 2000 Riggs bought his first prone paddleboard and was introduced to downwind paddling by some of his peers.
