Jess McFadyen: Capital Football's Diversity and Inclusion officer on the Football for All programme
from All Sport Breakfast Wellington · host NewstalkZB
Capital Football and the Wellington Phoenix are continuing to evolve their highly successful Football for All programme. It's all about connecting kids from a vast range of communities and backgrounds with the sport, when many may not otherwise be able to. With high costs such as gear, transport, registration, or communication difficulties, there can be huge barriers for particular communities to engage with sport. This programme, with significant support from the New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT), has enabled those aged 5 to 18 to get into their local football clubs, futsal teams, and school programmes by removing those barriers that some face, with a large focus on the refugee and immigrant communities. Launched in Wellington but expanding right round the country thanks to the NZCT support, the programme recorded 70% growth in football participation alone last year, with over 2,200 participants in football thanks to this programme. The programme launched for 2024 at Sky Stadium before the Phoenix game on Friday night. Jess McFadyen is Capital Football's Diversity and Inclusion officer and joined Adam Cooper to talk about the programme and their aims for 2024.
