Isaiah 53 What do you think of when you envision Jesus? When He was walking on this earth over 2000 years ago, how do you imagine He looked? Do you picture Him as a blue-eyed ,movie-star handsome man walking the streets of Jerusalem? Maybe as a regal ruler dressed in royal purple as He traveled from town to town? The Bible speaks of a different type of Jesus. Isaiah 53 speaks of one who had neither form nor comeliness"- "no beauty that we should desire him"-"despised and rejected of men", and "as one from whom men hide their face, he was despised and we esteemed him not". It may shock some to learn that this is the description of the one identified by inspired men as being Jesus, the Son of God and Savior of men. According to Isaiah Jesus "was oppressed, yet when he was afflicted, he opened not his mouth" (Isaiah 53:7). The Holy Spirit spoke through Peter, saying, "For here unto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for you...who when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, threatened not; but committed himself to him that judged righteously" (I Pet. 2:21-23). Isaiah explained why Jesus "was despised and rejected of men..." this way: "All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way..." (Isaiah 53:6). Today we will learn more about whom the Bible says Jesus is and what that means to each one of us as we seek to follow Him daily.
