Instead, our eyes and ears are assaulted daily by violence, stubbornness, prejudice, intolerance and judgment. But in the Beatitudes, Jesus upsets some apple carts. He says, “The people in My kingdom aren't condemners, they're mercy givers. My kingdom kids aren’t known for their judgments but for their mercies.” Jesus is hitting them and us where we live. It's like Dietrich Bonhoeffer said after reading the Sermon on the Mount, “God has called on us to be a surprising people.” Mercy is the mark of those who have been with God. Join us this weekend for “The Blessed Brokenness of Mercifulness.”DISCUSSION QUESTIONS1. Mercy is counter-cultural because our society is anything but that. What’s the difference between holding somebody accountable for their words or behavior versus attempting to destroy them? As you critique what’s happening in the world all around us, be honest, have you ever gotten caught in the same type of extreme behavior? Why do we savor the destruction of people we don’t like? How might a Christian approach some of these same people or issues and bring a unique perspective that is not an extreme right or extreme left position? 2. Mercy is more than feelings of compassion. Mercy is action. Merciful people are moved to be part of the solution. Has God ever moved you to action in regards to a situation you witnessed? What was that like? What did you do? How did it make you feel?
