The beatitudes in the Sermon on the Mount are the most extensive teaching Jesus ever did on what it means to be blessed. He described the blessed life as poverty, mourning, meekness, hunger and persecution – hardly the things we associate with blessings. Yet the Jesus’ way is the only true path to the blessings of God. In this weekend’s message which is both an introduction to the beatitudes as well as an explanation of the very first beatitude, Pastor Keith talked about how the beatitudes are a stunning reversal of everything we describe as the blessed life. Why do you think we do this as a culture? Why do you think we do this as Christians?2. To be poor in spirit is to be spiritually powerless – it means to be in touch with our brokenness. In what ways have you become aware of your own personal brokenness?3. It is easy to play a part. It’s easy to pretend to be someplace we are not. If you hang around church any length of time, you pick up all sorts of ways of appearing and sounding spiritually fit. Given enough time, this sort of pretending becomes its own prison. We fake it for so long, we now fear admitting what we really don’t know, understand or live. Have you ever fallen for the trap of pretending? How long did it persist? What was the key to breaking free? 4. Discipleship is life-oriented not academically oriented. And discipleship best happens around what you’re dealing with right now – your biggest fears, your greatest weakness, your disappointments in relationship, your anger, selfishness, and frustrated desires.
