Jesus breaking bread

from Daily Picture · host Stephanie Hawkins

Today I saw, in my mind's eye, Jesus breaking bread. Each time He did, He gave thanks before He broke the bread - when He fed the 5000 with 5 loaves of bread, at the Last Supper and when he had supper 3 days after his death, with 2 men on the way to Emmaus who only recognised Him when they saw Him breaking bread (Luke 24). Bread is significant as is the breaking of it, with it being shared with many. In the Lord's Prayer, we acknowledge that God gives us His daily bread. Flakes of bread (manna) were provided divinely to the Israelites when they were crossing from Egypt to the Promised Land. Jesus was born in Bethlehem which in Hebrew means "House of Bread". In the Gospel of John 6:35 Jesus is recorded as having said, 'I am the Bread of Life ...,". Apostle Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 11:24 "And whe He had given thanks He broke it and said, 'Take eat. This is my body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of me". The references of broken bread and Jesus's broken body are linking the natural with the spiritual. Jesus had no bones broken on the cross. He sacrificed His life in order to share His grace and glory with us.
