Jesús Martín-Barbero (1937-) nació en Ávila (España) y vive en Colombia desde 1963. Doctor en filosofía, con estudios de antropología y semiología, es un experto en cultura y medios de comunicación que ha producido importantes síntesis teóricas en Latinoamérica acerca de la posmodernidad. Aparte de ejercer docencia en Colombia y México ha sido profesor visitante de las universidades Complutense de Madrid, Autónoma de Barcelona, Stanford, Libre de Berlín, King's College de Londres, Puerto Rico, Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Lima, entre otras. En 1975 fundó la Escuela de Comunicación Social de la Universidad del Valle y en 2003 obtuvo la nacionalidad colombiana. En esta conferencia realizada en Colombia en Abril de 2005, el maestro Jesús Martín Barbero define y analiza el rol de los comunicadores y plantea los desafíos del ejercicio del oficio, desde una perspectiva actual y superadora.
