Jesus Still Thirsts for You (The Inner Life)

from The Best of the Week · host Relevant Radio

On The Inner Life, Patrick Conley welcomed Father Dave Heney to continue the Lenten series on the Seven Last Words of Jesus. This time, the focus was Christ’s poignant words from the Cross: “I thirst.” Father Dave drew a striking connection between Calvary and the Gospel story of the woman at the well. In both moments, Jesus asks for water. In both, He reveals something deeper than physical need. His thirst is not only for a drink. He thirsts for souls. That is what makes the encounter with the Samaritan woman so powerful. She is wounded, isolated, and guarded. Her life has been marked by broken relationships and disappointment. Yet Jesus does not avoid her pain or flatter her into a shallow conversion. He speaks to her with both mercy and truth. Father Dave points out that this is the pattern of authentic conversion. Jesus desires to win her heart, but not cheaply. She must face the truth about her life before she can receive the gift He offers. And still, He wants her. That may be the most moving part of the whole Gospel. The woman returns to town transformed, amazed that Jesus has seen everything about her and has not turned away. This is the heart of Christianity: Our Lord knows our sins completely, and He still thirsts for us. Father Dave also highlights one small detail with enormous meaning: she leaves her water jar behind. She came seeking ordinary water, but after meeting Christ, she no longer needed what she first came for. She had found the living water. That is a fitting lesson for Lent. Honest self-examination can be painful, but it becomes possible when we know Jesus meets us there with mercy. He thirsts for us still, and only He can satisfy the deepest thirst of the human heart.
