Jesus, the Spirit, and the Living Temple - Episode 196

from Genesis Marks the Spot · host Carey Griffel

Christians often say that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit—but what relationship does that language actually describe? It can become shorthand for taking care of ourselves, receiving divine guidance, or carrying a private source of spiritual help. Those ideas have a place in Christian theology, but the New Testament’s temple and indwelling texts are describing something more relational and more deeply Trinitarian. In this episode, we trace the movement from the Word tabernacling among humanity to Jesus’ identification of his body as the temple that will be destroyed and raised. We then consider why the incarnate Son receives the Spirit, why the Spirit remains upon him, and how the Spirit-bearing Messiah becomes the one who gives the Spirit to his people. That pattern opens a window into the relationships of the Father, Son, and Spirit. The Father sends the Son and gives the promised Spirit. The Son receives the Spirit for his messianic vocation and, once exalted, pours the Spirit out upon the restored people of God. The Spirit comes from the Father, testifies to the Son, and brings believers into the shared life described as being “in Christ.” On the Monarchy of the Father: The Names of God, Part 2: YHWH - Episode 074 On This Rock Biblical Theology Community: https://on-this-rock.com/ Website: genesismarksthespot.com Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/GenesisMarkstheSpot Music credit: "Marble Machine" by Wintergatan Link to Wintergatan’s website: https://wintergatan.net/ Link to the original Marble Machine video by Wintergatan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvUU8joBb1Q&ab_channel=Wintergatan Chapters (00:00:00) - Temple, Refuge, and Why This Matters (00:05:55) - Indwelling as Relationship, Not Merely Resource (00:09:35) - Jesus as the Embodied Temple (00:17:11) - The Spirit-Bearing and Spirit-Giving Messiah (00:34:37) - Father, Son, and Spirit without Frame Collapse (00:40:15) - The Exalted Messiah Pours Out the Spirit (00:48:21) - Divine Indwelling and Participation in Christ (00:55:15) - Through Christ, in One Spirit, to the Father (01:00:01) - Temple Identity, Reconciliation, and Refuge (01:04:25) - Hidden with Christ: Mystery and Revelation
