聖經加拉太書5：22-23「聖靈所結的果子，就是仁愛、喜樂、和平、忍耐、恩慈、良善、信實、 溫柔、節制；這樣的事沒有律法禁止。」 保羅把「節制」列為聖靈果子的第九種表現，「節制」也有翻譯為「自制力」，意思是指一個人扼制自己的慾望和情感。 「節制」原文的意思是「裡面的能力」，是通過聖靈的考驗後有能力來約束、管轄、調和治理自己，使我們能行在 神的旨意中不至偏差。
