The horse is still following its regular route, leading the masked rider to suspect foul play. He and Tonto ride back along the trail to discover what happened to the missing expressman, knowing that only violence could separate a Pony Express rider from his mount and the important mail he carries.Meanwhile, in the town of Silver Gulch, prospector Jim Flood and his wife Ruth face a desperate situation. Jim has discovered a fortune in gold on his property, but his neighbor Hart Riggs has obtained a legal injunction preventing him from digging. Every time Jim tries to work his claim, loose shale slides down onto Riggs' property below. Riggs offers a mere $150 for land worth thousands, knowing the injunction prevents Jim from accessing his gold. As days pass and the Eastern mining company fails to make an offer, the Floods face poverty while their greedy neighbor waits for desperation to force their hand.
