He learned the importance of enjoying the moment and building relationships rather than worrying about winning. He emphasizes the importance of having close friends and mentors who believe in them, no matter what their results are, and to have balance in their lives. He believes that running is a school for understanding pain and encourages runners to be kind to themselves and to offer empathy for those who are suffering. Jim started as a sprinter but later realized he was better suited for longer distances.
